Fading Paint

When you have exterior walls that are constantly exposed to the sun, and especially in the hotter Summer months, the sun’s UV rays will break down the chemical bonds in the paint resulting in the pigment of your painted surfaces fading.  If you have painted with a darker shade, it will fade a lot faster than lighter tones.

Spider cracks

Often, water vapour will become trapped beneath the surface of your paint layer and this is when you will begin to notice thin cracks appearing on the painted surface.  This will become progressively worse over time.

Peeling/Cracking

Peeling of your paint or cracking is generally caused by various types of damp problems.  It could be penetrating damp, rising damp or moulds.  It is imperative to ascertain first what the underlying problem is.  You cannot paint over any damp problem, the damp must first be treated accordingly and thereafter you can paint.

Penetrating damp

NOTE:  It is usually best to work on damp issues in hotter weather, so as to allow for better drying out of treated surfaces.  Summer is the best time to tackle these issues, however one should always way up the choices as leaving damp will only cause further problems if left unchecked.

Penetrating damp is usually caused by condensation which is oftentimes found in smaller areas or poorly ventilated rooms.  You might notice excessive condensation on windows.  This damp is usually accompanied by a musty smell which is an early warning sign that indicates that you have a damp problem.

Rising damp

 You will often notice rising damp occurring especially on walls that are on your garden side.  The wall might feel cold to the touch or could even become wet in colder seasons.  You may notice peeling on wallpaper or paint.  Moisture from rising damp can cause paint to bubble and fall off the wall in some cases.  You may notice a powdery deposit on the floor.

Moulds

Leaving rising damp can cause rot to set in, especially along skirting’s or wood floors.  Moisture will cause fungi to grow and this may over time, left untreated, turn into black mould.  You will also notice a distinct musty odour.

All of the above are sure signs that a coat of paint is necessary.  Remember although Summer is a good time to paint your house, especially when dealing with moisture problems.  The underlying cause must first be established, treated and removed before painting can take place.
